Dining Table Size Guide for Real Households
From two-person apartments to holiday hosting for ten—pick a table size that fits chairs, people, and the room.
Space per person
Plan roughly 24 inches of table width per person for comfort; 30 inches feels generous for longer meals. Depth of 36–42 inches suits most rectangular tables so platters still fit in the center.
Round tables need diameter planning: a 48-inch round seats about four; 60 inches can seat six to eight depending on chair width.
Clearance rules
Leave at least 36 inches from the table edge to walls or other furniture so chairs can pull out. In tighter nooks, 30 inches can work with benches on one side.
Extension tables are ideal for American holiday hosting—daily life stays compact, then the leaf arrives for Thanksgiving.
