Rug Sizes That Make Furniture Look Expensive

Too-small rugs are the fastest way to make a living room feel unfinished. Here’s how to size rugs to sofas and dining tables.

Rug Sizes That Make Furniture Look Expensive

Living rooms

Aim for at least the front legs of all seating on the rug. Ideally, all legs sit on it. A common upgrade path in American homes is moving from an 5×8 to an 8×10 or 9×12 once the sofa arrives.

Leave a border of flooring around the rug so the room still breathes—usually 8–24 inches depending on room size.

Dining rooms

The rug should extend far enough that chairs remain on the rug when pulled out—typically 24 inches beyond the table on all sides.
